"FIVE AFFORDABLE SEASIDE HIDEAWAYS"
in the U.S.
July 2011
Glendeven Inn
Mendocino, Calif.
"A serene and romantic Mendocino B&B by the sea is an amazing proposition indeed.
But what puts the Glendeven Inn over the top
is that it's truly a farmstead, set on eight acres of meadow with, yes, grazing llamas.
The property, considered a distinguished inn in North America by Select Registry also gives nod to its wine country locale
by offering local wines by the glass at its Wine Bar. All of this comes at a good price, too.
For stays through July 31, you can receive up to 30 percent off the room rate,
depending on how many nights you stay.
The inn also offers a slew of packages and last-minute room discounts,
often up to 20 percent off.
Amenities include complementary wine and hors d'oeuvres every evening, free yoga classes,
and three-course, in-room breakfast with the inn's own farm eggs. Glendeven has mostly 5s on Trip Advisor."

COASTAL
LIVING MAGAZINE
April 2010
"Glendeven Inn, Mendocino,
California
For the ultimate cottage getaway, ask for
Sea Ridge Cottage, a 1,400-square-foot home that stands
alone on a grassy ridge above the Pacific. The Inn is six
miles north, though staff members will stock the kitchen with
your grocery list and even offer a gourmet chef to prepare
a special meal.
Field trip: Mendocino
is a few miles up the road, and there’s never been a bad walk
through that town, but take a hike past Van Damme State Park’s
redwoods in the early morning. You’ll see.
Night out: If you’re
staying at Sea
Ridge Cottage, the Ledford House restaurant is a mile
away. Every table has an ocean view, and the husband-wife
chef team leans to the French side of California cuisine.
Rates:
on-site rooms and suites, $121–$326/night, and Sea
Ridge Cottage, $213–$305/night; 800/822-4536 or glendeven.com"

Halloween related article: Eeriest
Abandoned Places
"Abandoned Skunk Train, California
Why It’s Eerie:
From Elk to Fort Bragg, Mendocino County’s Highway 1 is strewn
with ghost barns and shuttered lumber plants,
abandoned as redwood logging became illegal. In Fort Bragg,
the rusty maintenance yard for the number 681 Skunk Train,
which began operations in 1885, is the creepiest. Train employees
who work late nights on the adjacent,
newly restored and active Skunk Line claim that the ghost
of C. R. Johnson, founder of the railroad, lurks in the old
depot.
How to Experience It:
Etta Wilder, who hosted many a Skunk Line train passenger
at her rambling seaside farmstead,
still haunts Little River’s Glendeven
Inn (doubles from $150).
Ask for one of the inn’s cemetery maps, and pay your respects
at her gravesite."

"The most romantic getaway
in California.
We had
gorgeous views of the coast and a short walk
to Mendocino Headlands Park,
great food (featuring a truly excellent in-room breakfast),
a lovely room with luxurious details
(bedding, fireplace, robes, etc.)
If you need a real break from the ordinary, and

"Like something in a storybook setting, the Glendeven Inn
looks out on the coast through the trees.
Glendeven's old farmhouse is the first thing that visitors see
when they arrive:
the New England-style Federalist home
has been modernized on the inside with comfortable
couches perfect for afternoon drinks or a chance
to watch llamas graze in the pasture."

"A LLAMA NAMED...
A frisky male llama was born at Mendocino's Glendeven Inn,
and the owner John Dixon emailed past guests to
announce a contest to pick a name. He took in 200 entries
-- a full third of them along the lines of Barack O'llama,
O'bama Llama or Se Llama Obama. But Dixon did not include
any of those among the contest's 10 finalists.
How come?
"Llama's are non-partisan," the innkeeper explains.
He also reveals, however, that one of the
Democratic front-runners has actually stayed at his B&B
and it's not the one whose
name rhymes with llama.
In April of 1984, Arkansas Governor
Bill Clinton wrote in the guestbook, 'Hillary
and I have had a 'Glendeven'ly good time. Thanks for the inspiration
-- I think that romance is as important as politics!'
Probably not the last time he used that line."

"Dear John,
Your place is pretty much beyond description. Absolutely wonderful.
As far as Etta,
I wish I had 10% of whatever it was those people had. Amazing.
Again, thanks for a lovely Glendeven stay."

Dear John,
Diane and I truly enjoyed our stay at Glendeven and look forward
to visiting again. Besides being a lovely inn with gorgeous
views, we found it intimate, friendly, and attentive to our
needs. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend.

"Dear John,
Pat and I want to tell you what a wonderful getaway we had
last week at Glendeven. It had been at least 10 or 12 years
since we were guests there, and the Inn is better than ever.
We weren't disappointed. It was like coming home.
We had stayed there several times in the late 1980's and early
to mid 90's. Every change and improvement has just enhanced
the magic and joy of Glendeven. We cannot wait till we can return.
We only wish the drive wasn't so long, or it would be more often.
We have also stayed at B & B's in many parts of the United
States and this visit, more than other inns and the old days
at Glendeven, felt especially warm and friendly. We enjoyed
the camaraderie with other guests at the wine and cheese hour.
Often inns do not encourage that activity and guests remain
separate. We met some very nice people. Thank you for providing
us with 4 wonderful nights at Glendeven."
Fondly, Pat and Ginny

'We were here in December 1994 in the Garret. What changes
have taken place!
It is so serene, and it's God's wondrous area with the ocean,
trees, little critters, and the llamas.
This was the perfect place to end our journey on the California
coast. The room was so open and airy, along with the treats,
and hospitality.
Thank you all for making our stay so special!"

"We spent our honeymoon in Eastlin and also our fifth anniversary.
Now we have returned and have enjoyed a very romantic 25th anniversary
in the same suite!
As anyone can sense by reading the comments of all the past
guests, this is a magical place that touched all of us.
What made this a special experience is how welcome Ashley
made us feel at Glendeven including sharing feeding the llamas
with her. We will be back soon!"
Carol & John, San Francisco

"Dear John, Thank you for a wonderful stay and a chance to
share the beauty of Glendeven. The experience of waking
up and looking out to the Pacific, blue jays at your window,
and a floral path to add color to your day... of course the
4-star breakfast basket is beyond words!! We wish you
and Mike the best."
Frances & Stuart, New
York

"John,
Thank you for the warm welcome, the restful sleep in a beautiful
space, and a delightful breakfast. One night was just not enough."

"This place is just what I needed! It was my first time to
Mendocino and I so happy to have found Glendeven. How great
it was not to hear cell phones and TV noise. We enjoyed
our walks to the coast and seeing the birds, rabbits, and deer.
I hope to be back many times in my life. What a treat
it is for body, mind, and soul. Thank you John!"
Jan and Bill, San
Diego

"My husband and I just got married after being together for
a very long time. Some really close friends suggested
this place, and surely we'll thank them forever. Our stay
was so beautiful. We just love each other more after this
unique experience. Life has taken us a long way together
and we have a longer way to go, but this isn't our last stay
here. So we'll see you soon."
Mr & Mrs Saeed, London

"This was our first stay at Glendeven, and now we're hooked.
The atmosphere, view, breakfasts and the bed (my wife says,
don't forget the bed!) all contributed to a romantic and memorable
weekend."
Tim & Elaine

"Thirty three years of marriage! May we have 33 more
and spend our anniversary here. What a beautiful place.
My husband is sure it is the most wonderful place we have ever
stayed.... The website did not disappoint -- if anything it
is understated. We will definitely be back.
The peace, the gardens, the total relaxation -- truly special."
Janice and Dave

"What a beautiful setting and lovely room to celebrate
our anniversary of 39 years. This gift from our loving children
will begin a tradition of visiting the Mendocino coast, Glendeven
Inn and this wonderful space called Brair Rose."
Harry & Ellen

"With 15 years of B&B stays in our past, we were delighted
to find the Carriage House. It's one of the very best experiences
we have had -- great setting, all the right special touches
and great breakfasts. What a memorable visit to the North Coast!
Thank you for doing everything well".
Neel & Sue

|
"Have you ever found yourself hesitant to return to a
place that exceeded your expectations because it might not do
so a second time? This is our second visit to Glendeven and,
needless to say, we haven't been disappointed!"
Sally & Steve
|
"In one word ... WOW! Glendeven has exceeded our expectations
by far. We've traveled all over the country, and in all aspects
this is one of the most beautiful inns we've ever visited. The
world needs more places like this."
Brett & Lori
|
|
"This is a wonderful room, a wonderful inn -- extravagant
simplicity. Heard no phone ring. Saw no television. Ate like
a ranch hand at breakfast. Life is lived in the details, and
it all has been considered here, without any sense of contrivance.
BRAVO!"
Jann

"Dreamy ... I give it 5 Pillows ... no wonder Glendeven
rhymes with Heaven"
Merryl

"Thank you. We needed a real break from the mad rush of
our lives, and we found it at Glendeven. From feather beds to
crab frittatas to quails at the bird feeder -- this was a joy."

"How can it be that each time we return to this place
it is even more peaceful, pretty and perfect? We visit as often
as we can, sneaking away from our hectic routines in the Bay
Area. Thanks to . . . the entire staff for these 3 days of quiet
and casual luxury".
