Mendocino Hiking
Although the area is probably better known for its marine than land-based activities, multiple Mendocino hiking opportunities can be found close by The Glendeven Inn.
First is the Big River Unit of Mendocino Headlands State Park, purchased from a timber company in 2002 and located right next to the town. At 7,334 acres it is small compared to some other state parks, but contains redwood trees, marshland, mudflats, an abandoned quarry and more than two dozen rare species of birds. There are over 8.3 miles of river with paths on both sides. Many side roads and trails left over from the park’s logging history can also be explored, but caution is advised when leaving the main path.
The Fern Canyon hike at Van Damme National Park, only 3 miles away, is a 5 mile round-trip hike that takes its visitors along the bottom of a canyon filled with ferns and redwood trees. Another option, the Bog Trail, is shorter to walk and can be found near the park's entrance. Both paths are paved and lead to beautiful views. Van Damme National Park also features a beach often used by scuba and abalone divers and a Pygmy Forest, recognized as a National Natural Habitat.
