Mendocino Whale Watching
From December through April, over 20,000 California Grey Whales make their way along the length of the coast on their yearly journey from Alaska to Baja California. Mendocino whale watching is great because of small crowds and excellent vantage points such as the Mendocino Headlands and Point Cabrillo light station.
The whale sightings are also a chance to take part in some local activities: the Mendocino Whale Festival; Little River Whale Festival in Little River, only 3 miles away; and Fort Bragg Whale Festival, 18 minutes away, are all opportunities to take part in fun activities like wine, beer and chowder tastings, art exhibits and whale walks. These festivals take place in succession in March. For a closer look several Mendocino whale watching boats are available for hire and for the ultimate view, Coast Flyers can take you on a flight to get for a birds-eye perspective which leads to far more sightings than on land or sea.
For more information about the whales themselves, MacKerricher State Park’s Gray Whale & Marine Animal program in Fort Bragg offers interesting talks and a ride to Laguna Point deck to look for whales with binoculars and spotting scopes. This program is offered each weekend from January through March.
